Attention Parents:

Dear Parents and Guardians of Ladson Elementary School Students:
Student safety at our schools and transparent communication are always top priorities for Charleston County School District.  As such, I would like to share with you the following information regarding the recent discovery of asbestos containing material at Ladson Elementary School.

During the planning for a maintenance project at Ladson Elementary School in February 2019, technicians identified sheetrock (wall board) joint compound above an acoustic ceiling for asbestos testing. A certified laboratory conducted testing and analysis in March on the joint compound above the ceiling and in the walls and found that it contained asbestos. They also completed air testing throughout the school and found that the asbestos in the joint compound presents no known risk for students and staff. The asbestos found is encapsulated within joint compound and paint. A licensed asbestos inspector determined that the asbestos containing material is in good condition and may be safely managed in-place.

Future management of the school facility will include inspections every three years by a licensed asbestos inspector and semi-annual surveillance inspections under the AHERA program (Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act) to confirm that the condition of the joint compound has not changed.  Also, annual updates will be provided to parents, teachers, and employee organizations regarding the availability of an asbestos management plan for the school and any response actions taken or planned.

Results of the aforementioned testing are available upon request in the front office of the school, and if you have questions about this matter you may refer them to the CCSD Facilities Management Department which you may reach at (843) 566-8132.
